About us
|
Acoustic Sussex began its existence on a wet Thursday evening in Autumn 2004. It mainly followed the death of John Smedley, the man who successfully ran Folk South East many years. To cut a long-story short, we put on our first gig in November 2004, with the excellent Clive Gregson (and Kamila Thompson, daughter of Richard and Linda Thompson, in support). The venue was the White Hart Inn, near Ardingly, Sussex, where a packed house enjoyed great music in a lovely intimate atmosphere. (For a review - well, pictures - follow this link: Gig review.)
Several years on, and despite being run entirely by a small team of volunteers, we now consider ourselves to be an established, if small-scale, name on the live music circuit. What we lack in full-time commitment we try and make up for in the passion we have for the music itself. Our efforts have been recognised by bodies such as the PRS Foundation for New Music.
What kind of music is it?
We promote acoustic or semi-acoustic singer/songwriters and other musicians, whether their music is folk, country, blues or the downright unclassifiable (don't you just hate music categories?). Unlike the folk club scene, our events are mainly concert-style performances. Whilst there may be a support act and/or MC, there will not be 'floor spots' of the kind often associated with the more traditional folk clubs. The artists we promote will generally be established, professional artists - but we also provide a platform for support slots (and other opportunities) for up and coming artists, including more local and/or amateur acts.
Not for profit
Acoustic Sussex has been established as a 'not for profit' organisation - any money we make from promoting events over the year is paid to charities. At the start of 2007, we paid £5,000 to St Catherine's Hospice at Crawley, including matching contributions from Legal & General plc. At the start of 2008, we made a further donation of £1,500 to St Catherines and £1,500 to the MS Society's Brambles Respite Care in Horley. In its News Release, spokesman Peter Spencer says "Our main aim is quite simply to put on great quality live music events but as a non-profit voluntary organisation, any money we make from our programme is paid to charity. Donations of £1,500 each (including matching donations from Legal & General Group plc) have been made to the MS Society's Brambles Respite Care Centre in Horley and to St Catherine's Hospice in Crawley." |
